In ancient Japan bamboo was prized as a material easily made malleable to create a number of crafts - be it baskets or shades. The original treatment of bamboo was similar to basket weaving in terms of shaping the dry grass into rope and today the treatment is essentially the same. Updated into the industrial model, bamboo shades are now an amalgamation of other reeds and grass along with bamboo without sacrificing usability.
